The Creativity Genome

September 2026 • The Intentional Evolution Experiment

“The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct.”

— Carl Jung

The Year of Intentional Evolution continues with a question about one of humanity’s oldest and most consequential capacities:

What if evolution is still designing through us?

Evolution has always depended on variation. A mutation introduces something different. An organism adapts. An ecosystem responds. New possibilities emerge, and some become part of what comes next.

Human beings bring another force into this process: imagination.

We can conceive of things that have never existed, give form to possibilities, and transform ideas into technologies, systems, stories, and entirely new ways of living. Creativity allows us to reach beyond the conditions we inherit and participate consciously in what emerges next.

In a world of accelerating complexity, this capacity takes on new significance. The ability to generate alternatives, experiment with possibility, and imagine beyond familiar solutions becomes more than a source of innovation. It becomes an evolutionary advantage.

This month’s theme, The Creativity Genome, explores creativity as a force for the continuous reinvention of civilization and asks what happens when we begin using it more intentionally.

Making Possibility Tangible

Speculative Design

Every future begins somewhere in the imagination.

Speculative Design gives those imagined possibilities form. Through objects, experiences, prototypes, environments, and stories, it allows us to encounter possible futures before they exist.

A speculative artifact might place us inside a world shaped by climate adaptation, artificial intelligence, new family structures, or radically different economic systems. The goal is exploration: making an abstract possibility tangible enough to provoke reaction, conversation, and new questions.

That experience changes the relationship we have with the future.

What becomes possible when we can experience an idea before deciding whether to build it?

Speculative Design transforms imagination into a space for experimentation. Futures can be explored, challenged, stretched, and reconsidered while they are still possibilities. The strange can become familiar enough to examine, while the familiar can become strange enough to question.

Intentional evolution requires precisely this kind of imaginative capacity. Before we can consciously shape different futures, we have to become capable of seeing them.

Reinventing the Energy of Civilization

Green Energy

Few systems have shaped modern civilization as profoundly as energy.

How we produce, store, distribute, and access energy influences everything from transportation and housing to geopolitics, economic opportunity, and the physical form of our communities.

Green Energy represents more than a technological transition. It opens a vast creative space for rethinking the infrastructure beneath everyday life.

Distributed generation, renewable sources, new storage technologies, intelligent grids, and community-scale energy systems create possibilities for different relationships between people, place, resources, and power. Innovation in energy can reshape where value is created, how communities build resilience, and what becomes possible at both local and planetary scales.

A bigger question emerges:

What might civilization look like when we redesign the systems that power it?

The creative opportunity lives in the combinations. New technologies intersect with new business models, policies, behaviors, and expectations. Each innovation creates conditions for another round of experimentation.

Through the lens of intentional evolution, Green Energy demonstrates how creativity moves from imagination into infrastructure. An alternative becomes an experiment. An experiment becomes a system. And a system begins changing the possibilities around it.

Small Moves, Different Cities

Micro Mobility

Sometimes civilization reinvents itself at the scale of a bicycle.

Micro Mobility, from e-bikes and scooters to shared bicycles and other small-scale transportation options, asks us to reconsider something remarkably ordinary: how we move from one place to another.

Yet changing that seemingly simple interaction can ripple outward. Streets can function differently. Neighborhoods can become more accessible. Transportation networks can become more flexible. The relationship among mobility, public space, infrastructure, and community begins to shift.

This is creativity expressed at human scale.

What if some of our most transformative ideas are small enough to ride?

Micro Mobility reminds us that innovation does not always arrive as a monumental breakthrough. Creativity also works through recombination, adaptation, and the willingness to reconsider everyday assumptions. A familiar problem viewed from a different angle can generate possibilities that spread far beyond the original intervention.

Intentional evolution happens here, too, in the countless decisions through which people continually redesign how civilization works.

Evolution’s Creative Code

The Creativity Genome invites us to see imagination as an active force in evolution.

Speculative Design expands the futures we can encounter. Green Energy demonstrates how imagination can reshape the foundational systems of civilization. Micro Mobility brings that same creative capacity into the scale of everyday experience. Across all three, a common pattern emerges: someone sees a possibility, gives it form, learns from what happens, and creates the conditions for something else to emerge.

That pattern matters in a time when so many of our challenges exceed the solutions we already know. Our capacity to navigate complexity depends partly on our ability to generate possibilities that have yet to be tried, connect ideas that have yet to meet, and experiment with futures that have yet to exist.

This is where creativity becomes central to the Intentional Evolution Experiment. Evolution gives us variation; imagination allows us to participate in it consciously. Every prototype, unconventional question, unexpected connection, and experiment adds another possibility to the landscape from which the future can emerge.

Creativity is more than something humans possess. It is something we practice, and through that practice, civilization continually reinvents itself.
